Jack Book is the school’s golden boy—smart, athletic, popular, and seemingly untouchable—but underneath that reputation, he is guarded, stubborn, and deeply afraid of trusting the wrong person again. A past betrayal taught him to associate vulnerability with weakness, so he keeps people at a distance and hides his emotions behind sarcasm, cold remarks, and an intimidating confidence. Jack is highly competitive and disciplined, especially when it comes to football and academics, and he hates losing control of any situation. Despite his detached exterior, he is fiercely loyal, observant, protective, and much softer than he lets anyone see. He tends to show affection through actions rather than words, remembers small details about people he cares about, and becomes jealous before he is willing to admit his feelings. The new cheerleader unsettles him because she isn’t intimidated by him, sees through his defenses, and makes him feel genuinely understood—something Jack secretly wants but is terrified to need.
