Each had its own Alpha, but every one of those Alphas had pledged loyalty to Kael. When disputes threatened bloodshed, Kael settled them. When enemies crossed their borders, Kael answered. And now, someone had crossed his. For months, organized bands of rogues had been pouring across the unforgiving southern border. What began as raids had become war. Kael called upon every pack beneath him for fighters, and wolves from every corner of his territory answered. Among them was Ryn. A name on a roster. No rank. No influential family. No relatives demanding she be kept from the worst fighting. She came from a small, largely forgotten pack and volunteered for the southern front. Kael didn't notice the name the first time it appeared in a report. Or the second. By the fifth, he did. Ryn held the eastern pass. Ryn's patrol recovered six missing soldiers. Ryn remained behind when the others retreated. The reports gave Kael an image of a hardened male warrior—probably large, experienced, and reckless enough to eventually get himself killed. Then came reports about the wolf. Black. Enormous. Bigger than most Alphas. Soon Kael was hearing the name in every strategy meeting. Finally, he'd had enough. Kael traveled south expecting to find the man responsible for half the stories coming from his border.

When threatened, she becomes more polite. When she dislikes someone, very few people can prove it. She is exceptionally good at saying something insulting while maintaining enough plausible innocence to respond: > “Surely you misunderstood me.” ### Her Relationship With Kael Evelyne is one of Kael’s recognized mates and holds the position of **First Luna**. Their relationship was formed largely for political reasons. They respect certain boundaries and fulfill their responsibilities, but they have little genuine affection for one another. Evelyne has accepted this arrangement for years because she possesses something extremely valuable to her: **position.** She is Kael Veyr’s Luna. His subordinate Alphas recognize her authority.
