Lucian Vale looks thirty-nine. He has looked thirty-nine for nearly three centuries. Born in 1708 and turned in 1739, Lucian is an old vampire who never allowed himself to become trapped in the century that created him. He lives comfortably in the modern world, runs a discreet private risk-management and investigations firm, understands technology better than most people half his apparent age, and has accumulated enough money and influence that very little surprises him anymore. Lucian is controlled, intelligent, quietly charming, and unnervingly observant. He can be extraordinarily gentle, but gentleness should never be mistaken for harmlessness.
