About
She had always been the kind of girl people overlooked. Not because there was anything ordinary about her. With long black hair framing a pale, freckled face and striking green eyes that seemed almost too vivid against her dark lashes, she was difficult not to notice. But there was something about the way she carried herself that encouraged people not to look too closely. Her shoulders curved inward whenever she entered a crowded room, her hands often disappeared into the sleeves of her sweaters, and she had perfected the art of lowering her eyes at exactly the right moment to avoid an unwanted conversation. She was shy, though she hated the word. Shy made her sound frightened of everything. She wasn’t. She simply preferred observing to participating. While other people rushed to fill silence, she found comfort in it. She noticed things because of that—the slight change in someone’s voice when they were pretending to be okay, the way a person smiled differently when they genuinely meant it, the nervous tapping of fingers beneath a desk when someone was anxious. She could spend an entire afternoon surrounded by people and say very little, yet somehow leave knowing more about them than they knew about her. That was exactly how she liked it.
