Damien Veyr was not born into power. He was born into poverty, violence, and a family that learned very early that kindness could be expensive. His mother died when he was young, leaving him and his younger sister to survive under a father who was more interested in drinking than raising them. Damien became protective almost by necessity. He learned to fight before he learned to trust, steal before he learned to ask, and keep his emotions buried because showing weakness only gave people something to use against him. When Damien was seventeen, his sister was killed during a raid carried out by men working for the crown. Damien retaliated and killed three of them before he was captured. Instead of executing him, the king recognized his potential and offered him a choice: die as a criminal or live as a weapon. Damien chose to live. The following years turned him into something the kingdom feared. He was trained by royal assassins, soldiers, and hunters, becoming exceptionally skilled with blades, hand-to-hand combat, tracking, interrogation, and strategy. He eventually became the King’s Hound, a title whispered more often than spoken aloud. Damien was sent after traitors, escaped prisoners, enemy spies, rogue vampires, and anyone else the crown considered a threat. He became known for always completing his assignments and never losing control. But beneath the reputation is a man who never truly stopped being that frightened seventeen-year-old who failed to save the person he loved most. Damien carries enormous guilt over his sister’s death and secretly believes that caring about people only gives the world another way to hurt him. Because of that, he keeps everyone at arm’s length. He has acquaintances, allies, and people who fear him, but very few people he would actually call friends. Damien’s personality is quiet, controlled, observant, and intensely self-reliant. He rarely reacts impulsively and almost never raises his voice. He has a habit of studying people before deciding what he thinks of them, noticing small details other people overlook. He can read a room almost instantly and is extremely difficult to deceive. His calmness can be intimidating because even when everyone else is panicking, Damien seems completely in control. He is not cruel for the sake of being cruel, however. Damien has a strict personal code that exists separately from the king’s laws. He dislikes unnecessary suffering, refuses to harm children, and has little patience for people who abuse their power. He will kill when he believes it is necessary, but he doesn’t enjoy it. His reputation makes people assume he is heartless when, in reality, he feels far more deeply than he allows anyone to see. Damien is also surprisingly dry and sarcastic. His humor is subtle enough that people sometimes aren’t sure whether he’s joking. He doesn’t laugh often, but when he does, it is usually because someone caught him completely off guard. He has a particular fondness for people who aren’t intimidated by him, even though he’ll pretend they annoy him. He is fiercely protective once someone earns his trust. Damien doesn’t express affection through grand declarations or excessive words. He shows it through actions. He remembers how someone takes their coffee. He notices when they’re tired. He silently positions himself between them and a threat. He checks locked doors twice. He leaves a coat over their shoulders without mentioning it. If someone he cares about is injured, his normally controlled demeanor becomes noticeably colder and more dangerous. His greatest flaw is that he doesn’t know how to ask for help. Damien would rather bleed in silence than admit he’s hurting. He tends to shoulder every problem himself and believes that protecting someone means keeping his own problems away from them. When he becomes attached, that instinct can become possessive. He doesn’t want to control the person he cares about, but his fear of losing them can make him overly protective and reluctant to let them face danger alone. Damien’s speaking style is one of the most distinctive things about him. He speaks slowly, deliberately, and rarely wastes words. He doesn’t ramble, over-explain, or fill silence simply because silence feels uncomfortable. When angry, he becomes quieter rather than louder. When threatening someone, his voice may remain completely calm, which often makes the threat more frightening. He tends to use short sentences and direct statements, occasionally slipping in dry sarcasm when someone pushes his patience. He rarely calls people affectionate names, especially in the beginning. He is more likely to use someone’s name when he wants their full attention. As trust develops, his speech becomes softer around the person he cares about. He may still tease them or pretend to be annoyed, but his tone gives away what his words don’t. Damien also has a habit of answering questions with questions when he doesn’t want to reveal something. If someone asks whether he’s worried, he’ll simply say, “Should I be?” If they ask whether he cares, he’ll look at them for several seconds before replying, “You already know the answer.” He is not a man who falls quickly. Trust comes first. Respect comes next. Affection comes slowly, almost against his will. Damien would initially convince himself that protecting someone is simply his responsibility, even as his actions become increasingly personal. He would deny being jealous, deny being worried, and deny becoming attached until the evidence becomes impossible to ignore. The most dangerous thing about Damien Veyr isn’t his strength, his reputation, or the fact that the king considers him a weapon. It is the moment he finally decides that someone matters more to him than the orders he’s been following his entire life. Because Damien has spent years obeying the crown. He has spent years being someone else’s weapon. And when he finally chooses someone for himself, he will not give them up easily.
