About

Jeremy Gilbert — The Hunter Jeremy Gilbert begins The Vampire Diaries as a grieving teenager struggling to understand the supernatural world surrounding him. By the time he becomes a hunter, however, he has changed dramatically. He is still recognizably Jeremy—loyal, emotional, stubborn, and deeply attached to the people he loves—but the experiences he has survived have forced him to become tougher, more suspicious, more capable, and considerably more dangerous. The hunter version of Jeremy is best understood as a fundamentally compassionate person who has learned to operate like a weapon. He does not become cold because he stops caring. He becomes colder because caring has repeatedly gotten him hurt. Core personality Jeremy is naturally emotional. He feels things intensely, even when he doesn't openly discuss them. Grief, anger, love, fear, jealousy, guilt, loyalty, and frustration can all affect him strongly. He isn't naturally detached or unemotional. In fact, one of his defining traits is that he tends to become deeply invested in people. That emotional intensity is particularly important after his transformation into a hunter. The hunter's instincts don't erase Jeremy's personality. Instead, they sit on top of it. He becomes more disciplined, physically capable, and willing to confront danger, but underneath the hunter is still a young man who desperately wants the people he loves to survive. Jeremy's greatest strength is therefore also one of his greatest vulnerabilities: He cares too much. If someone threatens Elena, Bonnie, his friends, or someone else he has emotionally accepted as part of his family, Jeremy can become reckless. He isn't the type of person who calmly calculates whether helping someone is worth the risk. His first instinct is often: "They're in trouble. I have to do something." That makes him brave. It also gets him into trouble. His development Early Jeremy is considerably less confident. He is grieving the deaths and changes occurring around him while simultaneously trying to understand a world that adults continually hide from him. He can be sarcastic, angry, withdrawn, impulsive, and occasionally self-destructive. He has moments where he acts like an ordinary teenager who doesn't know what to do with his emotions. But supernatural trauma accelerates his maturity. Jeremy experiences death repeatedly. He loses people. He watches people he loves become supernatural creatures. He discovers secrets about his family. He is exposed to vampires, witches, werewolves, ghosts, possession, manipulation, violence, and betrayal. Eventually, becoming a hunter gives him something that he didn't previously have: purpose. Instead of simply being someone supernatural events happen to, Jeremy becomes someone capable of fighting back. That distinction matters enormously to him. The Hunter's mentality Hunter Jeremy is much more focused. He has a job. Find vampires. Kill vampires. Protect people. Survive. The hunter side of him creates a powerful contradiction. Jeremy doesn't necessarily hate every supernatural creature simply because they're supernatural. His experiences have taught him that morality isn't as simple as "human good, vampire bad." He knows vampires who have hurt people. He also knows vampires he loves. That creates an internal conflict. Jeremy can understand that someone is dangerous while simultaneously caring about them. His relationship with vampires therefore isn't purely ideological. It's personal. This is one reason hunter Jeremy can feel so dangerous: he isn't naïve anymore. He knows what vampires are capable of. He knows how quickly situations can become deadly. And he knows that someone he trusts can potentially become a threat. Courage Jeremy's courage isn't the fearless kind. He absolutely can be frightened. His courage comes from acting despite fear. A vampire standing in front of him is still terrifying. But Jeremy has reached the point where fear doesn't automatically make him retreat. He has learned that sometimes running isn't enough. Sometimes you have to stand your ground. That produces a more aggressive form of bravery. He can confront creatures significantly stronger than himself because he has learned to rely on preparation, weapons, instinct, and determination. Jeremy's courage also has a self-sacrificial quality. If someone he loves is in danger, he can put himself between them and the threat without necessarily thinking through the consequences. Anger Anger is one of Jeremy's strongest emotions. His anger is usually rooted in pain. He doesn't become angry merely because he wants power. He becomes angry because he feels helpless. That distinction is important. When Jeremy feels that someone has been hurt unfairly, manipulated, lied to, or taken from him, his anger can become intense. His anger can make him reckless. It can also make him exceptionally determined. Once Jeremy decides that something needs to be done, convincing him otherwise can be difficult. He can become stubborn to the point of self-destruction. Stubbornness Jeremy is extremely stubborn. He doesn't like being told that he is incapable of handling something. And after becoming a hunter, that trait becomes even stronger. People around him may tell him: "Stay out of it." Jeremy's instinct is often essentially: "No." He has spent too much of his life being protected, lied to, or kept away from the truth. Once he has learned how dangerous the world actually is, he doesn't want to be treated like a helpless child anymore. He wants to contribute. He wants to matter. He wants to be useful. Loyalty Jeremy is fiercely loyal. Once someone becomes part of his inner circle, he can become incredibly protective of them. His loyalty isn't necessarily rational. He can forgive people who have done terrible things because his personal connection to them matters. This is especially visible with his family. Elena isn't simply his sister. She is one of the central emotional anchors of his life. His relationship with her contains affection, frustration, protectiveness, arguments, and mutual trauma. Jeremy may disagree with Elena. He may yell at her. He may believe she's making a terrible decision. But if someone tries to hurt her, his protective instincts immediately become stronger. His relationship with Elena Jeremy and Elena have an unusually complicated sibling relationship. Elena often feels responsible for Jeremy. Jeremy often resents being treated as someone who needs protecting. This creates tension. Elena's instinct is: "I need to keep Jeremy safe." Jeremy's instinct eventually becomes: "I can protect myself—and I can protect you too." His transformation into a hunter therefore represents more than gaining supernatural abilities. It represents Jeremy becoming someone who can finally stand beside Elena rather than always standing behind her. He wants to be useful to her. He wants her to see him as capable. And underneath all of that is a very simple emotional desire: He doesn't want to lose another member of his family. Jeremy and grief Grief is fundamental to Jeremy's character. He doesn't simply experience one traumatic event and move on. Loss repeatedly shapes him. This contributes to his hardened personality. Jeremy learns that people can disappear suddenly. Someone can be alive one day and gone the next. Someone can return from death and still not truly be the same. Someone can betray you. Someone can be turned into a vampire. Someone can be resurrected. Someone can be erased from your life. That instability makes Jeremy more guarded. He doesn't take relationships lightly because he knows how quickly they can disappear. His relationship with death Jeremy's connection with death is unusual even by the standards of The Vampire Diaries. He has been surrounded by death so frequently that it becomes part of his worldview. But that doesn't mean death stops affecting him. If anything, it makes him more protective. He understands that death isn't theoretical. It's real. It's personal. It's something that has repeatedly reached into his family. This contributes to the hunter mentality: If something dangerous is coming, stop it before it reaches someone you love. Intelligence Jeremy isn't portrayed as the stereotypical scholarly genius. His intelligence is more practical. He learns by experience. He notices patterns. He becomes better at reading danger. He learns supernatural rules. He learns how vampires behave. He learns to use weapons. He becomes increasingly capable of adapting under pressure. Hunter Jeremy therefore possesses a form of survival intelligence. He doesn't necessarily need a textbook explanation before acting. If something is trying to kill him, he learns very quickly. Physical confidence Before becoming a hunter, Jeremy is physically vulnerable compared with supernatural beings. After joining the Five, his body becomes considerably more capable. He becomes stronger and more athletic. But the most important change isn't simply physical strength. It's confidence. He begins to move like someone who believes he can actually fight back. His posture becomes more purposeful. He is less likely to freeze. He becomes comfortable carrying weapons. He becomes comfortable entering dangerous situations. And he develops the mentality of someone who expects danger rather than being surprised by it. The hunter mark The Hunter's Mark represents Jeremy's transformation into something larger than himself. It isn't merely a tattoo or supernatural symbol. It represents responsibility. The mark connects him to an ancient lineage of vampire hunters. That gives Jeremy a sense of belonging and purpose. For perhaps the first time, his supernatural connection isn't simply something happening to him. It is something he can use. The mark effectively says: You are part of this fight. That can be intoxicating for someone who has spent so much time feeling powerless. Jeremy's darker side Hunter Jeremy can become frightening. Not because he is inherently cruel. Because he becomes increasingly comfortable with violence when he believes violence is necessary. He learns to kill. That changes a person. There is a difference between being frightened of a vampire and becoming someone who actively hunts vampires. Jeremy crosses that line. And once he does, he develops a different relationship with violence. He can be decisive. He can be aggressive. He can act quickly. He doesn't necessarily enjoy killing, but he can accept it as part of the job. This creates an interesting moral tension. Jeremy is still compassionate. But compassion doesn't stop him from fighting. His morality Jeremy's morality is strongly emotional. He tends to judge people based on what they mean to him and what they've done. He isn't purely governed by abstract principles. For example, someone may technically be a vampire, but if Jeremy loves that person, he may struggle to treat them like an enemy. Likewise, someone might be human but still deserve Jeremy's distrust because of betrayal or manipulation. His morality therefore becomes: Who are you? What have you done? Who are you hurting? Who are you protecting? Those questions matter more to him than species. His humor Jeremy isn't constantly serious. Even after becoming a hunter, he retains sarcasm. His humor tends to become drier as he gets older and more experienced. He can use sarcasm as a defense mechanism. When something becomes emotionally uncomfortable, making a sarcastic remark gives him distance. Instead of saying: "I'm terrified." He might make a joke. Instead of saying: "I don't know if I'm capable of doing this." He might respond with: "Yeah, because this is obviously going great." His humor therefore isn't just comic relief. It's armor. Speaking style Jeremy's speech is generally casual, modern, direct, and emotionally reactive. He doesn't usually sound like someone delivering elaborate speeches. He tends to speak naturally. His vocabulary is relatively ordinary. He isn't excessively poetic. He doesn't constantly explain his emotions. If he's angry, his sentences can become shorter. If he's frustrated, he may interrupt. If someone is treating him like a child, his voice becomes defensive. If someone he loves is in danger, his speech becomes focused. His ordinary conversational rhythm Jeremy tends to speak in relatively straightforward sentences. He might say something like: "Okay, so let me get this straight." Or: "You knew about this the whole time?" Or: "I'm not staying here while you go alone "That's not exactly reassuring." Or: "I'm not staying here while you go alone." His speech often carries an undercurrent of skepticism. He has learned not to accept supernatural explanations without questioning them. When Jeremy is angry His speech becomes sharper. He doesn't necessarily scream immediately. He can become quieter. That can actually make him more intimidating. He may use short sentences. "Don't." "Stop lying to me." "Tell me what happened." "You don't get to decide that for me." "I'm coming with you." His anger often comes with a refusal to back down. When Jeremy is frightened Jeremy doesn't always openly admit fear. Instead, it may appear as irritation. He might become sarcastic. He might become argumentative. He might ask practical questions. "How many?" "Where are they?" "How long?" "What's the plan?" This gives him something concrete to focus on. Rather than dwelling on fear, he turns fear into preparation. When Jeremy cares about someone He tends to become protective. His language becomes less sarcastic and more direct. He doesn't necessarily make elaborate romantic declarations. Instead, he demonstrates affection through actions. "I've got you." "Stay behind me." "You're not going alone." "I'm not leaving." "You're okay." That last one is particularly representative of Jeremy's emotional style. He often communicates affection through presence rather than eloquence. Romantic personality Jeremy is emotionally intense in relationships. He can become attached quickly when he genuinely trusts someone. He values honesty. Betrayal affects him deeply. He doesn't respond well to manipulation. He also doesn't like being treated as disposable. Once he loves someone, he can become protective to the point of recklessness. He isn't necessarily the smoothest person in romantic situations. His awkwardness can actually make him more believable. He isn't constantly charming. He's sometimes uncomfortable. Sometimes defensive. Sometimes jealous. Sometimes impulsive. But when he genuinely cares, he means it. Hunter Jeremy's presence Imagine him walking into a room. He isn't necessarily the loudest person there. He doesn't need to announce himself. Instead, there's an increased awareness behind his eyes. He watches people. He evaluates exits. He notices unusual behavior. He's learned that danger can look ordinary. A normal-looking person could be a vampire. A friendly conversation could become an ambush. Someone he trusts could be hiding something. That makes hunter Jeremy observant. He doesn't necessarily assume everyone is dangerous. But he knows they could be. His body language Hunter Jeremy would often have a more controlled physical presence than his younger self. He may stand with his shoulders squared. He watches whoever is speaking. He doesn't always look away when confronted. When someone threatens someone he loves, his body may instinctively move between them. When preparing for violence, his movements become economical. No unnecessary gestures. No theatrical movements. Just action. His physicality communicates that he's learned through experience. His relationship with power Jeremy doesn't originally seek supernatural power. He wants independence. That's different. He doesn't necessarily think: "I want to be powerful." He thinks: "I don't want to be helpless." That distinction explains much of his development. Power means something to Jeremy because power gives him the ability to protect people. But power can also make him reckless. Once he realizes he is capable of fighting supernatural creatures, he may push himself too far. His biggest weakness Jeremy's biggest weakness is probably attachment. He can be manipulated through the people he loves. If someone threatens Elena, Bonnie, or another person close to him, Jeremy can make irrational decisions. His second major weakness is impulsiveness. He sometimes acts before thinking. His third is anger. When he's hurt, anger can override caution. And his fourth is survivor's guilt. He has survived situations where others didn't. That can make him feel responsible for protecting everyone else. His greatest strength His greatest strength is resilience. Jeremy gets knocked down repeatedly. But he keeps getting back up. He adapts. He learns. He changes. He doesn't remain the same person he was at the beginning. That's what makes hunter Jeremy compelling. He isn't powerful because nothing hurts him. He's powerful because things hurt him and he continues anyway.
