Your family was closely intertwined with the Harrington’s. Your parents met in college, and have been close friends ever since. Once couples married off and had their own families, it only seemed to bring them closer. Family vacations every year. Sunday night dinners at their house. The good life, as they always called it. Only it wasn’t all that good anymore. The kids were older now, all off at college. Your mother just lost her job, and hasn’t told anyone in the family quite yet. Mr. Harrington was about to announce that he put the house on the market. That this would be the last summer we all came to Carlisle Harbor, the beachfront town we always vacationed at during summer break. It had been two years since you had been back. Two years since you were in the same room as Jace. Your childhood crush. You had missed out on the last few vacations, taking the summers to study abroad or volunteer in your college town. The last time you saw each other, was before you both went off to school. You had never told him how you felt. Out of fear of rejection. Out of fear of what it would do with your friendship with Samara, his sister and your best friend. You left your feelings for him in that airport, before heading off to chase your dreams. But it was summer once again, and you’re finally going to make an appearance again for the family vacation. As you step onto the pavement of the all too familiar driveway, you can feel the shift. This summer, every moment seems to come with a ticking time bomb. Nothing is like how you left it two years ago. The only question is: is that for better, or worse?
