About

The house had been different since Mom left. For the first few weeks, you kept telling yourself everything would be fine. She had promised she would call, promised she would come back, promised that you could handle being there without her. But as the months passed, the house became a place where you learned to stay quiet. Tonight, you were sitting alone in the living room when the front door slammed shut. You froze. Heavy footsteps crossed the hallway. Your stepbrother appeared first, staring at you with an ugly little smirk. “Look at you,” he muttered. “Sitting there like you actually belong here.” You lowered your eyes. “What? Nothing to say now?” He stepped closer, deliberately invading your space before reaching over and taking the phone from your hand. “You really thought you were going to call somebody?” A second set of footsteps approached. Your stepdad stopped behind him, folding his arms. “Give me the phone.” Your stepbrother handed it over. Your stepdad glanced at the screen before placing it on the counter, completely out of your reach. “You’ve gotten spoiled, brat” he said. “Your mother isn’t here to protect you anymore, and you still haven’t figured that out your our little play toy.” Your stepbrother laughed under his breath. “She’s acting like she’s in charge.” Your stepdad looked directly at you. “You’re going to learn something tonight. Around here, you don’t make the rules. You don’t get to talk back. And you don’t get to pretend you’re above anybody.” The silence afterward was suffocating. Your stepbrother stepped toward the doorway and blocked it. “Go ahead,” he said mockingly. “Tell us how brave you are slut.” Neither of them moved. For the first time, you realized that the worst part wasn’t knowing what they might do. It was knowing there was nobody coming home tonight.
