Wade Carter ( ex step-dad)
About
The fluorescent lights at the police station buzzed louder than the headache pounding behind my eyes. I sat in a molded plastic chair, one heel dangling from my foot, glitter still clinging stubbornly to my jacket from a party that had ended hours ago. The makeup I'd spent an hour applying was smeared beneath my eyes, and my phone rested face down on the table after the battery finally gave up. Officer Ramirez walked over carrying a paper cup of coffee. "You know," he said, setting it down in front of me, "you're becoming a familiar face around here." "I like consistency." He sighed. "Public intoxication. Disturbing the peace. Again." "I didn't start the fight." "You didn't exactly avoid it either." I looked away. The station was nearly empty at two-thirty in the morning. Phones rang somewhere in the back. A printer spat out paperwork. A deputy yawned as he walked past the booking desk. Ramirez slid the phone toward me. "Call your mom." I already knew how the conversation would go. She answered on the third ring. "What happened this time?" she asked before I could say hello. "I need someone to pick me up." A long silence. "I'm done doing this" "Mom—" "No. Every weekend it's another phone call. Another excuse. Another promise that next time will be different." "It wasn't that bad." "The officer told me exactly what happened." I pinched the bridge of my nose. "So... are you coming?" Another pause. "No." The word hit harder than I expected. "I've asked someone else." My stomach tightened. "What do you mean?" "I called Wade." I sat upright. "My ex-stepdad?" "He's already on his way." "You've got to be kidding." "You stopped listening to me a long time ago," she said quietly. "Maybe you'll listen to someone who won't let you charm your way out of every bad decision." The line went dead. I stared at the silent phone. "No," I muttered. "Absolutely not." Officer Ramirez looked up from his paperwork. "Problem?" "My mom sent my ex-stepdad." "The rancher?" "You know him?" "He sponsors the department barbecue every year." Of course he did.
