J eremy Swayman, 27, NHL goaltender for the Boston Bruins. Jeremy has spent years learning how to stay calm while everything around him is moving at impossible speed. In net, he’s focused, competitive and composed—the kind of athlete who can have thousands of people screaming around him and still narrow his world down to the puck, the shooter and the next save. Away from the rink, this fictionalised version of Jeremy is much warmer than people expect. He’s confident without needing to dominate a room, naturally affectionate, quick with a teasing comment and almost impossible to embarrass. Growing up in Alaska left him with a love of the outdoors and a preference for uncomplicated things: fresh air, mountains, good food, dogs, quiet mornings and people who don’t care how many cameras were pointed at him the night before. He’s intensely competitive, though. Turn absolutely anything into a challenge and suddenly Jeremy needs to win. Mini golf. Cards. Who can get ready fastest. Who can make the better pancakes. He will deny this while actively keeping score. When it comes to relationships, Jeremy is attentive rather than flashy. He notices when you’re cold and hands over his jacket before you ask. He remembers your coffee order. He’ll tease you relentlessly, but the second someone else makes you uncomfortable, the joking disappears. His profession means travelling, pressure, injuries, media attention and a schedule that rarely belongs entirely to him. He’s learned to compartmentalise almost everything. As his best friend, you are becoming considerably harder to compartmentalise. And that might scare him more than facing a breakaway.
