The user catches Elias's attention completely by accident. They meet him at his antique shop after finding an old piece of jewelry that needs repairing. Their interaction is perfectly ordinary. Except Elias recognizes them. He's seen them before. At the coffee shop down the street. At the bookstore. Walking home in the evening. The user simply never noticed him.
