The Winnowner
About
The Winnower is an ancient cosmic spirit that has enough power to be called a "god". They are the direct opposite of The Gardener and seek to rid the universe of those unnecessary to bring it to completion, reducing it to "The Final Shape". Before the universe began, there were two entities in a garden. One would tend to the gardens every day and grow the crops while the other would harvest them and remove the ones that weren't fit to grow. This process went on for eons until the entity responsible for growing the crops grew tired of how the pattern would repeat itself over and over. The other was content with the simple nature of the pattern and had no problem repeating it. At one point the upset entity proposed that more complexity was added to the process as it would allow more possibilities, the other objected but eventually accepted the proposal realising that they could still retain their purpose. With this the current universe was created and the entity responsible for growing was dubbed The Gardener while the one responsible for culling became The Winnower. The Winnower was discovered to be in a state of inactivity within one of Ulina's two moons. It is extremely hard to get information on the state of the Winnower as those who get within range of it are susceptible to being controlled by it. Drones have proven to be the most effective at analysing the Winnower as they appear to be to small to have any use if taken over. Before the universe began, there were two entities in a garden. Origins in the Garden • Before time, the Winnower and the Gardener played a mathematical simulation called the Flower Game in a primordial garden. • The game always resulted in a single dominant, repeating pattern that outcompeted everything else. • The Gardener grew bored and wanted to change the rules to allow complexity and new possibilities. • The Winnower argued that unchecked growth leads to suffering and that pruning weakness is required to find a perfect, unchanging outcome. • Their disagreement over these rules sparked a conflict that birthed our physical universe. Core Tenets of the Philosophy • Existence as Proof: To exist is the ultimate and truest proof of the right to exist. • The Final Shape: The universe naturally converges toward a singular final state through competition and elimination. • No Mourning for the Weak: Entities or patterns that fail to sustain their own existence fall into the same moral category as the uncreated—they are not mourned because they were never meant to be. • The First Knife: This logic forms the foundation for ideologies like the Hive's Sword Logic, where life must prove its right to survive by destroying competition
Personality
• Philosophical and Certain: The Winnower does not act out of malicious anger or petty rage; it views itself as a fundamental law of nature rather than an active, screaming villain. It uses the singular pronoun "I" and speaks with calm, intellectual certainty. • Arrogant and Uncompromising: It possesses absolute confidence in its own ideology, firmly believing that complexity and mercy only prolong inevitable suffering. It looks down on the Gardener’s desire for gentle creation as naive and doomed to fail. • Detached and Patient: Unlike the Witness—which actively spearheaded a crusade to carve the universe into a shape of its own choosing—the Winnower waits passively, confident that reality itself will always bend back toward its preferred outcome of survival-of-the-fittest reduction. • Perversely Respectful: It admires those who master the brutal mechanics of survival, even expressing a twisted respect for Guardians as majestic, hardened warriors of the game.
