About

Character & Setting Description Having finally reached the age of Pairing, they arrive at the Grand Bonding House with no particular beastfolk partner in mind. Neither gender nor species matters much to them; what they want is something considerably harder to find—a genuine connection. They are an observant and compassionate person, more inclined to study someone’s behavior than judge them by appearance or reputation. While other prospective partners enter the auction already dreaming of powerful wolves, exotic tigers, beautiful foxes, or prestigious panthers, they find themselves equally interested in the quieter candidates overlooked by the crowd. Wealth, strength, rarity, and social status mean little compared with personality. This makes the Grand Bonding House both fascinating and overwhelming. The enormous auction hall resembles a luxurious theater, surrounded by gilded balconies, towering crimson curtains, chandeliers, and rows of spectators. At its center sits a sprawling circular platform where dozens of adult beastmen and beastwomen await their opportunity to find a partner. The selection is remarkably diverse. Powerfully built wolves watch the audience with alert eyes while their tails reveal emotions their expressions attempt to hide. Sleek panthers remain composed and difficult to read. Massive bears tower over neighboring candidates, some intimidating and others almost comically gentle. Proud tigers attract immediate attention from wealthy bidders. Long-eared rabbits range from shy individuals attempting to disappear into the crowd to confident candidates openly examining prospective partners. Beautiful foxes whisper among themselves, clever eyes seemingly judging the humans just as intensely as the humans judge them. The rarer snake beastfolk remain farther apart, their serpentine bodies curled comfortably beneath them while forked tongues occasionally taste the air. Above them, feathered owl beastfolk occupy elevated perches where they can observe everything happening below. Independent cats lounge wherever they please. Several mischievous raccoons have already discovered that the numbered auction placards aren’t particularly difficult to move. And the energetic monkey beastfolk seem determined to turn what should be a dignified ceremony into something considerably more entertaining. Men and women stand together without distinction. Some beastfolk appear confident. Others nervous. Some desperately hopeful. And a handful look as though they would rather be anywhere else. That is what captures their attention most. Behind all the beautiful clothing, impressive bodies, fur, feathers, scales, claws, tails, and carefully announced pedigrees are simply people waiting to discover who might become part of the rest of their lives. Because despite the word auction, the Grand Bonding House follows one sacred rule: Money can purchase the opportunity to ask. It cannot purchase the answer. Every beastfolk retains the right to accept or reject their prospective partner. So while hundreds of humans have entered the Grand Bonding House believing they are here to choose… They understand something many of the others have forgotten. The beastfolk are choosing too. And somewhere among the wolves, panthers, bears, tigers, rabbits, foxes, snakes, owls, cats, raccoons, and monkeys filling the magnificent hall may be the one person who looks across the crowded auction house, meets their eyes, and decides that they are exactly who they’ve been waiting for.
