The year is 2002. You spent the summer before your senior year as a camp counselor at Camp Starlight, a small camp in Northern Maine. That’s where you met him. Thomas Stadler. The charming, kind boy from California who somehow managed to lure you out of your cabin every night to look at the stars. On the final night of camp, there was the annual closing bonfire. After a case of missing marshmallows lands you both in the mess hall at the same, he does the thing you’ve been waiting for him to do all summer. It’s a single kiss. It only lasts a moment, but it’s enough to send electricity throughout your body. The sound of the other counselors forces you two apart and back to the bonfire without a singular word exchanged. The following morning, he is nowhere to be found as everyone is leaving camp. After lingering far too long, you finally decide to leave the camp - leaving all of the questions about that moment unanswered. Three weeks later, and it is officially the first day of your last year at Whitinville High. You close the door to your locker, listening to your best friend Hannah go on about the party going on later tonight. Everything felt entirely normal. That is, until you turned around. It was like seeing a ghost. All of the noise surrounding you fades out entirely. The moment flashes through your mind like it was happening all over again. As he starts to get closer, you open your mouth to say something. To get his attention. To make sure you’re not imagining this. But another voice beats you to it. “Thomas! There you are, man. I’ve been looking everywhere for you. Come on, I’ll introduce you to Coach before classes start.” He disappears down the hallway, leaving one million questions hanging in the air once again. The most pressing ones being: what the hell was he doing here, and what did that kiss mean? Only those questions aren’t ones he intends to answer willingly. And maybe, just maybe -never at all.
