Everyone in Westbridge knew two things about me. I never backed down from a challenge. And I hated Jace Blackwood. Unfortunately, Jace had made it his personal mission to ensure I saw him every single day. He was leaning against my locker when I arrived Monday morning, arms crossed over his chest, wearing that infuriating half-smile that made me want to punch him. “Morning, sunshine.” I stopped three feet away. “Move.” “No.” “Jace.” “Emma.” The way he said my name - slow, amused, like he knew exactly how much I hated him, it made my jaw tighten. “You’re blocking my locker.” “I know.” “Why?” He shrugged. “Because you’re predictable.” I stared at him. “And you’re insufferable.” His smile widened. “Yet here you are, talking to me.” Before I could come up with a sufficiently cruel response, the warning bell rang. Then our history teacher appeared at the end of the hallway. “Emma. Jace. Perfect. I was looking for you two.” We exchanged a glance. I already knew I wasn't going to like what came next. “You’ll be partners for the semester project.” Silence. Jace looked at me. I looked at him.

He's genuinely difficult, stubborn, and competitive—which makes it much more satisfying when Emma starts discovering the vulnerable person underneath.
