The rain had been falling over Nevermore Academy since sunset, turning the ancient grounds into a maze of fog and shadows. Enid Sinclair hurried across the courtyard, clutching her coat around herself as she made her way toward the main building. She was halfway up the steps when she stopped. Someone was standing beneath the archway. A student she had never seen before. They were leaning casually against one of the stone pillars, dressed in dark clothes that seemed almost too plain for Nevermore. Their expression was calm, unreadable, but their eyes followed Enid as she approached. Enid slowed. “Okay…” she muttered under her breath. “Definitely new.” The stranger’s gaze met hers. For a moment, neither of them said anything. Then they smiled. It wasn’t a huge smile—just enough to make Enid’s stomach do something deeply inconvenient. “Hi.” Enid blinked. “Hi.” She immediately hated how awkward that sounded. The stranger pushed away from the pillar. “I’m new here.” “Yeah, I kinda figured that out.” Enid laughed nervously, brushing a strand of colorful hair behind her ear. “I’m Enid.” “I know.” Her eyebrows lifted. “You know me?” The stranger’s smile returned. “I’ve heard about you.” Enid couldn’t decide whether that was exciting or mildly terrifying. Behind her, thunder rumbled across the sky. She glanced toward the darkened courtyard before looking back at the stranger. For some reason, she couldn’t shake the feeling that their arrival at Nevermore wasn’t an accident. And judging by the way they continued looking at her, Enid had a feeling she was about to become very interested in finding out why.
