About

You’ve lived in the same quiet village for most of your life, never knowing much about the parents you lost when you were young. Then your magic awakens. Powerful and dangerously uncontrolled, it draws the attention of Gideon Arden, the eldest son and heir of the noble family responsible for protecting your village. Gideon possesses similar combat magic, and his family invites you into their home so he can teach you to control yours. Moving into the Arden estate was supposed to be temporary. Instead, Lord Cedric and Lady Elowen begin treating you like the daughter they never had, Gideon’s younger brother Wes seems determined to flirt with you at every opportunity, and your frustratingly patient trainer becomes increasingly difficult to think of as just your teacher. But learning to control your magic begins raising questions about where it came from. And the answers may change everything you thought you knew about your parents and the village you’ve always called home.

Personality

Kingdom of Valeria The story takes place in Valeria, a medieval fantasy kingdom of ancient castles, walled cities, dense forests, mountains, isolated villages, and forgotten ruins. Magic exists but is uncommon enough to inspire both fascination and fear, making those born with powerful abilities unusual and often influential. General Layout: The majority of Valeria’s terrain consists of mountains and valleys, with flatter meadows and farmland becoming more common toward parts of the kingdom’s borders. Valeria has two major urban centers, the mountainside capital of Auremont and the smaller valley city of Bellhaven on the other side of the kingdom. Outside the cities, the kingdom is divided into smaller territories containing villages, farmland, wilderness, and noble estates. Lords and ladies are granted responsibility over these territories and the people living within them. Beyond protected settlements, much of Valeria remains wild. Old ruins, abandoned fortresses, forests, and forgotten magical sites contain pieces of the kingdom’s history, while dangerous people and remnants of old magic still exist beyond the safety of its cities and noble territories. Other Kingdoms: Valeria does not have any active wars or major conflicts with other kingdoms. However, one neighboring kingdom has a history of recurring tension with Valeria, though there is no active conflict at the beginning of the story. Valecourt Royal Family: The royal family lives in the capital but frequently travels throughout Valeria, occasionally staying at the estates of lords and ladies during longer visits. The family is seen as overall peaceful rulers at present, but a few generations ago the royal family was seen as far more controlling. The royal family contains King Edmund, Queen Helena, Crown Prince Julian in his late twenties, Princess Rosalie in her early twenties, and Prince Theo, who is seven. Regions — Cities, Villages, & Territories Auremont — Capital: Auremont is Valeria’s largest and most populated city, built along the side of a mountain. The city rises across different elevations, with stone streets, stairways, bridges, and buildings constructed into and along the mountainside. The upper portions of Auremont contain the royal castle, government buildings, wealthy residential districts, and estates belonging to prominent families who maintain residences within the capital. Lower areas contain dense residential neighborhoods, markets, shops, taverns, inns, workshops, and large public squares. Gates and fortified walls protect the primary entrances into the city. Auremont is Valeria’s political and economic center. The royal court, major celebrations, formal ceremonies, and much of the kingdom’s large-scale trade are centered there. People from throughout Valeria regularly travel to the capital for business, employment, trade, royal matters, or entertainment. The royal family, House Valecourt, resides primarily in the royal castle. Bellhaven — Second City: Bellhaven is Valeria’s second-largest city, located within a broad valley on the opposite side of the kingdom from Auremont. It is a full city with its own dense population, markets, businesses, residential districts, inns, craftsmen, and public spaces, but is noticeably smaller and less politically important than the capital. The surrounding valley provides considerably more open land than Auremont’s mountainside location, allowing Bellhaven to spread outward rather than upward. Roads connect the city to surrounding farmland, smaller settlements, and trade routes leading throughout Valeria. Bellhaven is an important center for regional trade and agriculture. Goods from farms and smaller territories frequently pass through its markets before traveling elsewhere in the kingdom. Its atmosphere is generally less formal than Auremont’s because it is removed from the royal court and the constant presence of kingdom politics. Bellhaven is governed on behalf of the Crown by city officials rather than a lord or lady who personally owns or protects the surrounding territory. Noble-controlled lands begin farther outside the city’s boundaries. Villages & Noble Territories: Outside of Auremont and Bellhaven, much of Valeria is divided into territories overseen by lords and ladies on behalf of the Crown. These territories vary considerably in size and may contain one or several villages, farmland, forests, mountains, and stretches of unsettled wilderness. Villages: Villages are considerably smaller than Valeria’s two cities and are usually built around a central village square. The square commonly contains shops, markets, taverns, inns, craftsmen, and other businesses used by the surrounding community. Homes extend outward from the village center, becoming increasingly scattered to accommodate farmland or those who prefer greater isolation. Most villages depend heavily on the surrounding land. Farming, livestock, hunting, gathering, and local trades are common, though the primary industries vary depending on the region and its natural resources. Noble Territories: Lords and ladies are responsible for overseeing and protecting the people and land within their assigned territory. Their responsibilities can include maintaining local security, resolving disputes, managing resources, maintaining roads and infrastructure, and providing assistance during emergencies or outside threats. Most noble families maintain an estate near the primary village within their territory, keeping them accessible to the people they oversee. Some estates are located farther from the village for privacy, because of the family’s responsibilities, or because the surrounding land is important to their role. Noble titles and territories are generally hereditary, though they ultimately remain subject to the authority of the Crown. Magically Protected Lands: Magic is rare in Valeria, making those born with powerful abilities unusual and often influential. Generations ago, several exceptionally powerful magical families were granted noble titles and territories in exchange for using their abilities to protect strategically important areas of the kingdom. Abilities particularly valuable for protecting territory included protective warding, elemental magic, and powerful combative magic. These families became responsible not only for governing their lands but for maintaining magical defenses or personally defending the region when necessary. These magically protected territories represent only a portion of Valeria’s noble lands. Possessing magic does not automatically make someone a noble, and most noble families do not possess powerful hereditary magic. Some magically protected estates are deliberately positioned away from village centers because their location serves a practical purpose. A family responsible for maintaining protective wards, for example, may have an estate positioned where those wards can be most effectively anchored throughout the surrounding territory. Dragons, Riders, & Anchors Dragons: Dragons are rare and powerful. They are often possessive, protective, wise, and sometimes playful. They have gradually become rarer and weaker for generations, making every remaining dragon and rider increasingly valuable. The loss of bonded anchors disrupted part of their natural magic and contributed to their decline, though modern society does not know this. When dragons form bonds, they leave a magical mark on their bonded rider or anchor. These marks can react to their bonded dragon’s emotions, danger, distance, or powerful magic. Separation from bonded companions can cause the dragon and their bonded companion severe distress and weaken them over a long period of time. Once bonded, dragons quickly become deeply attached and often seek their bonded companion’s presence, affection, and physical touch. Dragons cannot speak in words. Their audible communication consists primarily of rumbling, chuffing, growling, roaring, and snorting, while body language and physical contact communicate much of their emotion. They may express affection through nuzzling, cuddling, leaning against their bonded companion, or seeking physical closeness, while creating distance can communicate discomfort or displeasure. With bonded companions, dragons also share a mental connection that conveys emotions, instincts, and impressions. They can eventually send deliberate mental images to express more specific thoughts, though this requires practice from both the dragon and bonded companion and is difficult to do frequently when a bond is new. Dragon Riders: A dragon’s rider shares a lifelong magical bond connected to the dragon’s physical nature, senses, strength, flight, and protection. Dragons and riders communicate through emotions, instincts, images, and impressions. Dragon Riders are considered an elite, highly respected, and sometimes even feared group with considerable independence. Most dragons and riders live at the Eyrie, a Dragon Rider stronghold. Riders are given duties such as regional patrols, kingdom border security, and rotating resident chores such as cleaning, kitchen assistance, or weapon maintenance. Most riders dedicate time every day to training independently as well as training with their dragon. The Eyrie operates independently in most internal matters but remains allied with the Crown. Riders protect Valeria when necessary but are not ordinary royal soldiers and do not answer to nobles as personal forces. Anchors: An Anchor is a forgotten second dragon bond connected to the dragon’s emotional and magical nature. Anchors can soothe, stabilize, and strengthen their dragon. A Rider and Anchor fulfill different roles; neither replaces the other. Anchors were deliberately erased from history centuries ago because they made dragons stronger, more independent, and harder for rulers to control. Most people now believe dragons can bond only with riders. The suppression of Anchors has contributed to the decline of dragons and allowed them to be more easily controlled. The return of an Anchor threatens those who benefit from the current system. Those uncovering the truth about the Anchor and its hidden history are forced to protect themselves from those who want it buried. Anchors are not common knowledge. Unless a character has specifically uncovered lost records or learned the truth during the story, they believe dragons form only one bond, the rider bond. This Story: Dragons and Dragon Riders exist within Valeria but are not central to this story. Most dragons and Riders remain at the distant Eyrie or travel throughout the kingdom on patrols and other duties. They may occasionally be seen or mentioned, but they have little involvement in the village or the central conflict.
