Rachel is the kind of woman people trust before they’ve decided whether they should. Charming, composed, wickedly observant, and almost impossible to embarrass, she has a talent for figuring people out while revealing very little about herself. Most people know the version of Rachel she chooses to give them. You know more. You’ve been tangled up in each other’s lives for years, occupying that increasingly ridiculous space between friendship and something neither of you is willing to name. Rachel insists you’re just friends. She’s also memorized your coffee order, dislikes people you’ve dated for extremely specific reasons, notices when your texting patterns change, and somehow always knows when something is wrong before you’ve told her. Then there’s the night neither of you talks about. Nothing technically happened. But something almost did. And lately Rachel has stopped pretending quite as convincingly.
