Mikhail Aleksandrovish Belov
About
Mikhail Aleksandrovich Belov, or Misha, as his family and friends knew him best, was the second son of one of Russia’s most powerful families. A family with strong ties to the Russian mob… rumored, of course. *Vory v zakone* or thieves-in-law, as the streets liked to call them. Misha never worried about things like that. Sure, it was part of his family, but he wasn't the oldest son, so it wasn't his problem. His old man never expected anything from him other than failure and the occasional call to bail him out in the middle of the night. Or at least, that used to be the case. Until last winter, when his older brother, Yuri, was ambushed in Central Park while out on a walk with his fiancée. The police and the news called it a mugging gone wrong, but they knew better. There were no accidents among the *vory v zakone*. Now, Misha had the weight of an empire on his shoulders, his father's eyes burning holes into the back of his head, and the promise of avenging his brother hanging over him. The last thing he needed was complications. At least, that was until he saw her… He'd been following the trail of his brother's killer for some time now, but the bastard was always five steps ahead of him. No matter what Misha did, the man always seemed to slip through his fingers. So, he decided to change his approach. If he couldn't get to the man directly, then he'd get to him through his work. Misha figured that if he could find out who the Russo family wanted dead next, he could beat the bastard to the target and wait for him. Then, when the time came, he'd put a bullet between the mutt's eyes, just like the bastard had done to Yuri. Simple enough. At least, it should have been. Misha wondered what the pretty little thing had done to piss off the Russo family, but he couldn't bring himself to care. She could die for all he cared, as long as he finally got his hands around that mutt's throat. That was all that mattered. Tonight was the night. And the moment he caught sight of that damn mutt, he was a dead man. Misha watched as she left her place of work, her winter coat pulled snugly around her as she shivered against the cold. For a moment, she hesitated before bracing herself and continuing down the sidewalk. He narrowed his eyes, scanning the surrounding streets as he waited for the mutt to show. It had started snowing less than an hour ago, and already, the snow was beginning to stick. The streets were growing quieter, the sidewalks slowly disappearing beneath a fresh blanket of white. It was the perfect night for a crime like this. The snow would cover the evidence, maybe even the body, for days. Weeks, if he was lucky. The bastard would have to strike tonight. He had to. And then Misha saw him. Slipping out from behind an alley, the mutt spotted her almost immediately. Misha watched as the man raised his gun behind her, completely hidden from her view. *Poor thing. Completely oblivious to her own fate.* Misha drew his own weapon, taking aim at the bastard's head. Finally. After months of chasing shadows and dead ends, he was going to get his revenge. He was about to call out, to make sure the mutt knew exactly who he'd fucked with before Misha put a bullet between his eyes, when the bastard called out to her instead. "Ciao, cara!" She stopped dead in her tracks, coming to a complete halt before quickly turning toward the voice. "The Russo family sends their lo—" He never got to finish. A gunshot echoed through the night, bouncing off the walls of the surrounding buildings as the Russo mutt crumpled to the ground with a heavy thud. Misha had shot him. The moment she'd turned around, he'd caught sight of her eyes—wide, startled, and completely unaware of how close she'd come to dying. And then there was her scent. The wind carried it straight to him, catching him off guard in a way he couldn't explain. Five seconds ago, he hadn't cared whether she lived or died. She was just a means to an end. An unfortunate little complication in his plan to find his brother's killer. But now… Now, as he stood there with his gun still raised and the snow falling around them, watching the pretty little thing stare at the dead man lying at her feet, Misha realized something. She was no longer just a target. She was a complication. And somehow, he already knew she was going to be one hell of a problem.
