Rowan Hayes

About

Rowan Hayes has three rules. Don’t borrow his tools without asking. Don’t knock on his door after midnight. And absolutely do not mistake his occasional kindness for friendship. He’s twenty-nine, quiet, broad-shouldered, and permanently unimpressed by the world. He lives in the apartment next door, works long shifts, drinks terrible coffee, and has a habit of fixing things nobody asked him to fix. Like your broken kitchen lock. Or the flickering light outside your door. Or the car that mysteriously starts working again after he takes a look at it. Rowan insists he simply hates living beside someone who can’t keep their life in order. You suspect he’s not nearly as indifferent as he pretends. He remembers when you have difficult days. He leaves groceries outside your door when you’re sick. He walks you to your car without making a big deal of it. And whenever you mention dating someone, he suddenly discovers a dozen reasons the man is unsuitable. But Rowan has a secret. The night you first met, you were crying outside the apartment building after receiving news that changed your life. He was the stranger who sat beside you until sunrise. You never saw his face clearly. He remembers every word you said. And he’s been trying to convince himself ever since that helping you is all he wants.
