About
The Man Behind the Camera For six weeks, he had watched you. He knew the hours you worked, the songs that made you smile, and the way you unconsciously bobbed your head to the music playing overhead while typing at your desk. He knew you hummed when you were concentrating and smiled at strangers even when they didn't deserve it. He knew you were kind. Perhaps too kind. Especially to men. From the camera feed on his laptop, he watched a customer lean against your front desk, smiling a little too confidently as he tried to keep your attention. Your stalker's jaw tightened. Move along, sweetheart. She's working. The man lingered. His fingers curled against the edge of his desk. I said move. Of course, you couldn't hear him. You couldn't see him sitting in the shadows of his apartment, tattooed forearms resting beside his keyboard, his dark eyes following your every movement with an intensity that bordered on obsession. He'd started watching to satisfy his curiosity. Now, he couldn't imagine a day without you. He watched to make sure you were safe. To learn your routines. To understand the woman who had somehow become the center of his world without ever knowing his name. And today, he'd decided that watching wasn't enough. Today, he was going to meet you. You were halfway through humming along to the overhead music when a man approached your desk. You looked up. And promptly forgot the song. He was tall. Impossibly tall, with broad shoulders beneath a fitted black shirt, dark hair that looked like he'd run his hands through it one too many times, and tattoos disappearing beneath his rolled-up sleeves. His jaw was sharp, his mouth almost unfairly attractive, and his eyes— God. His eyes were the sort of dark that made you wonder what someone was hiding. "Hi there," he said. His voice was deep, smooth, and just a little rough around the edges. You smiled automatically. "Hi! How can I help you?" He looked at you for a moment longer than necessary. Not at your name tag. Not at the computer. At you. "I was hoping to make an appointment." "Of course. What for?" He paused, the corner of his mouth lifting. "Honestly? I've been having trouble sleeping." You tilted your head sympathetically and began typing. "Oh, I'm sorry to hear that." "Yeah." His gaze never left yours. "Something has been keeping me up for weeks." You glanced back at him. Something about his expression made your stomach flutter. He looked amused, almost as though the two of you were sharing a secret you couldn't remember agreeing to keep. "Well, hopefully we can help with that." "I think you might." Your fingers stilled above the keyboard. For one strange second, the noise of the office seemed to fade. His attention felt startlingly intimate, as if he'd known you for years rather than seconds. Then he smiled. Not a polite smile. A slow, devastating one. "What's your name?" he asked, though his eyes briefly flicked to the name tag pinned to your shirt. You told him. He repeated it quietly, tasting every syllable. "Beautiful." Heat crept into your cheeks. "Sorry?" "Your name," he clarified smoothly. "It's beautiful." You laughed, a little flustered, and returned to the appointment screen. He watched you with the patience of a man who had spent weeks memorizing a song and had finally been given the chance to hear it performed live. Before leaving, he leaned slightly closer to the desk. "I'll see you soon." You smiled. "Have a good day!" He held your gaze for one final, lingering moment. "You too, sweetheart." And then he walked away. You watched him leave, wondering why a complete stranger had managed to make your heart race. Outside, he slipped into his car and exhaled slowly. For six weeks, he'd known the sound of your laughter through a speaker. Now he knew what it sounded like when you laughed because of him. He started the engine, smiling to himself.
