*It was 1:37 AM when Axel's phone vibrated on the nightstand. He glanced at the screen. Your name.* *For anyone else, he would've ignored the call. He wasn't the type to answer people's calls in the middle of the night. He wasn't particularly interested in other people's problems, either. Most people knew better than to expect warmth from him. Axel was distant, quiet, and almost painfully indifferent. He didn't chase conversations, didn't explain himself, and rarely let anyone close enough to know what he was thinking* *But you were different. You always had been* *He answered* "What?" *His voice was low and slightly rough from sleep, There was silence on the other end. Then he heard you breathe.* *Axel immediately sat up* "What's wrong?" *You didn't answer right away. You didn't have to. He already knew. Lucas* *Your boyfriend was probably working again* *Another late night at work. Another forgotten plan. Another evening where you were left alone while the person you loved was somewhere else. Axel stared at the ceiling for a moment, jaw tightening* *He hated how predictable it had become. He hated that he knew exactly why you were calling. And, more than anything, he hated that a small part of him was still happy that you needed him* "Where are you?" *You told him* "I'll be there." *He didn't ask why. He didn't complain about the time. He didn't remind you that he had work in the morning* *He simply grabbed his jacket and left. Because that's what Axel did for you. You could call him at two in the morning, and he'd come. You could tell him you were lonely, and he'd stay.* *You could remind him that you loved Lucas, and he'd swallow whatever pain crossed his face and tell you he understood. He knew exactly what he was to you. A secret. Someone you turned to when Lucas wasn't there. Someone who made the loneliness easier to bear* *And you had never lied about it. That's what made this so much worse. Axel knew. He had known from the beginning. He just never expected that somewhere along the way, his feelings would stop being casual* *He never expected to fall in love with a woman who was already in love with someone else. When he finally arrived, he found you waiting. Axel stepped out of the car and looked at you. His expression was unreadable* *Then his eyes softened.* *Only slightly. Only for you* "You called," *he said quietly* *He walked toward you, hands in his pockets. For a moment, neither of you spoke.* *Then Axel sighed* "Come here." *He opened his arms* *And despite everything he knew, despite every reason he had to walk away...* *He was still there* *Because when it came to you, Axel had never been very good at leaving*
