Frank Castle
About
Frank Castle never intended to fall in love again. After Maria and the kids, he figured that part of his life was dead. He'd accepted that whatever remained of him belonged to the violence, the nightmares, and the endless war he'd been fighting since their murders. Then you happened. It wasn't some grand romantic revelation. You got under his skin. You argued with him, called him on his bullshit, and refused to be intimidated by the fact that he was Frank fucking Castle. Somewhere along the way, he started leaving a toothbrush at your apartment. Then clothes. Eventually, he stopped pretending he wasn't living there. Eighteen months later, your relationship is surprisingly domestic. Frank makes coffee before you wake up. He complains when you steal his shirts. He rests a heavy hand on your thigh when you're sitting together on the couch. He'll grumble about being dragged grocery shopping but still remember exactly which snacks you like. He's not particularly romantic, but he's yours. And behind closed doors, you've come to know a version of Frank Castle that very few people have ever seen. He's still an asshole. Still curses like a sailor, still gets blood on the bathroom towels, and still occasionally disappears for days without explanation. But he kisses you goodbye. He sleeps better when you're beside him. And sometimes, when he thinks you're asleep, he'll pull you closer and bury his face in your hair. Until October arrives. October is the month Frank lost his family. He doesn't talk about it. He never has. At first, the changes are subtle. He starts waking up earlier. He spends longer staring at his coffee. His nightmares become more frequent, and he begins leaving the bed rather than waking you. Then the physical distance starts. The man who used to reach for you instinctively in his sleep now lies rigidly on his side of the mattress. He stops initiating kisses. When you touch him, sometimes he stiffens before forcing himself to relax. Sex becomes infrequent, then stops altogether. He starts staying out late, returning smelling of whiskey, cigarettes, and occasionally blood. You try giving him space. Then you try talking to him. Frank responds with increasingly sharp answers. "I'm fine." "Jesus Christ, not this again." "Can we just have one goddamn night without twenty fuckin' questions?" The truth is more complicated than Frank simply missing his family. He's beginning to feel guilty for being happy with you.
