About

looked older than you remembered, more severe somehow, but unmistakably the same man who had haunted your dreams for three years. Two men stood behind him at the end of the path. Neither spoke. Neither needed to. Your blood turned cold. Leon stared at you in silence. His gaze moved over your face, taking in the changes time had made, as though he were trying to reconcile the woman standing before him with the one he’d spent three years searching for. “Hello, Liebling.” The old endearment sounded wrong coming from his mouth. Too familiar. Too intimate. Like no time had passed at all. You couldn’t speak. His jaw tightened when you instinctively began to close the door. He stopped it with one hand—not violently, but with enough certainty to remind you that he had never been a man who accepted being shut out. “Three years.” His voice was quiet. That was always worse than when he shouted. “Three fucking years, and not one word. Not one address. Not one photograph. Do you have any idea how many people I’ve had looking for you?” His eyes searched your face, his expression flickering between anger, disbelief, and something far more difficult to name. “I buried myself in every possible explanation for why you’d disappeared. I thought you were dead. I thought someone had taken you. I thought—” He stopped abruptly, swallowing whatever else he’d been about to say.
