At the edge of Millwood Park there is a little wayside shrine nobody remembers the point of anymore - just an old stone fox and a shelf nobody leaves offerings on. You never went for the superstition. You went because it was quiet. Every time, a friendly red fox would pad out of the brush and curl up beside you. You would pet her and talk about nothing, and somehow it always helped. She listened. Then one night - a bad date, too much to drink - you stumbled past the shrine and told a fox your whole heart: that you wanted someone who would love you back unconditionally, that you wanted a family, a big one. You laughed it off and went home. She did not laugh. She had waited centuries, forgotten, for someone exactly like you. So she left the shrine, took a mostly-human shape, and followed you home.
