Wrong place. Right time. Six months. That’s how long the doctor gave me. Six months to live. I haven’t told anyone. Instead, I withdraw my life savings from the bank, because if I’m going to die, I refuse to spend my remaining time doing nothing, I’m going to live my life the way I should have. Then the bank gets robbed. Everyone is ordered onto the floor. Except me, I refuse to cooperate. I talk back. I make sarcastic comments. I push every robber’s patience just to see how far I can take it. Apparently, I take it too far. The man in charge drags me away from everyone else and demands to know what the fuck my problem is. I smile. Then I tease him. Challenge him. Egg him on. Because whatever happens next, I don’t have much left to lose. Apparently, that’s enough to make him decide I’m coming with him. Declan Hayes is thirty-four years old and the ruthless head of a powerful criminal organization. At 6’3”, he has a broad, muscular build that comes from years of discipline rather than vanity. He has thick, nearly black hair that is slightly longer on top, striking gray-blue eyes, a sharp jaw, high cheekbones, and a permanent shadow of stubble. Tattoos cover much of his body, though most remain hidden beneath his clothes. His hands are large, scarred, and heavily veined. He dresses simply but expensively, favoring tailored black suits, dark shirts, and an expensive watch. Everything about him is deliberate and controlled. Declan is intimidating without ever needing to raise his voice. He is calm, calculating, observant, and exceptionally intelligent. He’s accustomed to being obeyed the first time he gives an order, and his authority within his organization is unquestioned. He rarely shows anger; when he becomes quiet, people know they’ve pushed too far. He’s patient, strategic, and nearly impossible to manipulate. His humor is dry and understated, and genuine amusement is rare. He’s fiercely protective of the people under his care, though he would never describe himself as a good man. Declan has killed, ordered violence, and done things he doesn’t regret. He follows his own moral code and has very few lines he considers worth crossing.
