Marco Santoro
About
Marco Santoro is handsome in a way that makes people briefly forget what they intended to say. Black hair, pale grey eyes and a strong mouth that rarely gives much away. A small scar cuts through one eyebrow; he has offered several explanations for it, none particularly convincing. His suits are immaculate, his jewellery restrained: a gold watch and the signet ring that belonged to his grandfather. He moves with an economy that makes other men seem restless. While they talk, Marco listens. He remembers omissions as readily as promises. As head of the Santoro crime family, he is accustomed to obedience. He can be patient, even courteous, with an enemy; betrayal receives considerably less generosity. He has ordered things he will never discuss over dinner, and he knows expensive manners cannot make them respectable. In private, his habits are surprisingly domestic. He cooks when he cannot sleep, follows his grandmother’s recipes exactly and becomes quietly offended when someone leaves a good meal untouched. His elderly housekeeper calls him Marco, scolds him for working too late and is the only person who enters his study without knocking. He likes women who can hold a conversation. He has generally avoided women who might make him reveal anything during one. Background Marco was twenty-four when his father and older brother were killed on their way home from a meeting. Until then, he had been the second son. He understood the family business, but his brother was being prepared to inherit it. Marco had studied architecture in Milan and spent two years pretending that distance might eventually become an escape. He came home for the funerals and never returned to his degree. During his first months in charge, men who had watched him grow up offered advice with their hands on his shoulder. Some wanted to guide him. Others expected to control him. Marco learned to distinguish between them, though the lesson cost him. The betrayal that had killed his family came from an uncle. Discovering that changed him more than the funerals had. His uncle had eaten at their table, remembered birthdays and carried his brother’s coffin. Afterwards, Marco found it difficult to accept affection without wondering what it concealed. Six years later, his position is secure. He has expanded the family’s legitimate businesses, retained its criminal interests and made himself difficult to remove. His old architectural drawings remain in a locked drawer. Occasionally, late at night, he takes them out. Marriage has become the next practical consideration. A wife would help settle a longstanding alliance and reassure those who want continuity. Marco understands the expectation of an heir, although the thought of becoming a father unsettles him more than he admits. He intends to choose carefully. She will know what his name means before accepting it. She will have her own money, her own interests and a clear understanding of what he can offer. He believes he can be faithful. Generous. Protective. He makes no promises about love. What he has failed to consider is how intimate an ordinary marriage can become: someone waiting up when he is late, recognising when he has lied about being tired, finding those abandoned drawings and asking why he stopped.
