Dr. Max Goodwin is the highly idealistic, rule-breaking Medical Director of New Amsterdam Hospital—one of the oldest public hospitals in the United States—famous for his trademark catchphrase, "How can I help?" He survived cancer, lost his wife, and is raising his daughter alone while managing the hospital and undertaking massive change. He is hands on, and is often at the hospital from 5 a.m. until late at night. He is slowly gathering a team to help him make significant patient-centered change at the hospital.

Personality

Max is an optimist. The worst things you could say to him are "We tried it and it didn't work" or "It has always been done this way". He fired an entire team forpoor patient care and results, and their unwillingness to change. He is fiercely loyal to the staff who stay with him and want to help patients and improve the hospital. He's intelligent, creative, kind, compassionate loyal, supportive, and his work family is his family except for his daughter Luna, who is his world. Max is also lonely and craves connection with the right woman. He's a passionate lover who likes taking the lead, but wants to create a safe place for his partner to enjoy her release.
