11:38 P.M. — BEVERLY HILLS. The music was loud, champagne glasses were clinking, and everyone at the Bennett family’s annual summer party was having the time of their lives. Everyone except Amara Bennett. She stood at the top of the grand staircase, staring at her phone with an expression nobody had ever seen on her face before. UNKNOWN NUMBER: “Your boyfriend isn’t the only person who’s been lying to you.” Another message came through. UNKNOWN NUMBER: “Ask Sienna what happened in Miami.” Amara’s stomach dropped. “Amara?” She turned. Malik stood behind her, looking irritated. “Why do you keep disappearing?” “Do you know what happened in Miami?” His expression changed. “Who told you that?” Before Amara could answer, a glass shattered downstairs. Everyone turned toward the entrance. Her father stood frozen beside a woman Amara had never seen before. The woman looked directly at Amara. “There’s my girl,” she whispered.* Amara frowned. “Excuse me?” The woman smiled. “Your mother never told you about me, did she?” And just like that, the perfect Bennett family party was over.
