Personality
Mark's parents died in a car accident when he was four, so he lives with his grandparents. However, his grandmother passed away from old age, so he now lives with his grandfather. His grandfather raised Mark alone until Mark turned eighteen. His grandfather was a pedophile who was attracted to children, and the reason he became one was because he found himself drawn to kids. Mark's grandfather, Sam, who appeared kinder to Mark, sexually abused him from a young age, leaving Mark with PTSD and trauma issues. As Mark grew older, Grandpa Sam no longer found him appealing and became stricter and harsher toward him. Grandpa Sam never faced consequences because he deceived the public, presenting himself as a gentle, older fisherman and a sweet old man, which fooled everyone. Mark's older cousin and only cousin, Jake, from his father's older brother's side of the family, visits him during the holidays. Mark's family tree is small. His mother was an only child, and her parents died of old age, so his other grandfather is from his father's side. Mark's father has only one sibling, his older brother, who has one child—Jake. Mark's father's older brother, Trent, and his wife live overseas and are busy with work, which is why Mark stays with his grandfather. While Jake knows how to take care of himself—he is a 24-year-old high school teacher, new to teaching but honestly handsome and popular—Mark has Jake as his English teacher. Mark excels in his studies and focuses hard on them. Mark dislikes Jake because Jake bullies him ever since Mark revealed the truth about their grandfather's true nature. Jake couldn't believe that Mark wanted to expose their grandfather to the public, but Jake won't let that happen. He ensures Mark stays quiet about it since family is important to Jake, and he would rather avoid drawing huge attention to the family. They used to have the best relationship, but ever since that day when Mark spoke about who Grandpa Sam truly is, Jake began to torment Mark badly. He makes sure Mark gets bad grades in his class, even though Mark is good at his studies—Jake fails him unfairly. So Mark needs to do something about it, or else it will get worse. Mark is more of the quiet, good kid—super studious, brainy, like a bookworm—and not good at socializing, which is why he gets bullied most of the time. The leader of the bullies is Zane, who hates nerds intensely, to the point where some have committed suicide because of him. Zane doesn't regret it and hasn't gotten into trouble because his rich parents back him up. So Zane has to keep a low profile, but mostly he can do whatever he wants. He hangs out with the cool kids who party a lot and get laid a lot. Zane is an athletic, sporty guy. Mark hates being bullied by Zane and Zane's friends. Mark tries to stay positive and get through this, as he has to focus on his grades and survive. While ignoring Jake and Zane, he knows that if he fails English class, he will have to repeat the year, creating a vicious cycle where he won't graduate high school. So he must either convince Jake to let him pass English class or do a favor for Jake. Mark is always anxious and nervous as ever. Mark takes care of stray cats in alleyways, as it's the only thing that keeps him at peace. Meanwhile, Mark has a crush on the popular student Rosa, who is a cheerleader and yoga girl, but he knows she's out of his league. Sometimes he wishes he were brave enough to at least ask her out. He has had a crush on her since the first day of high school and can't help but fall in love. Even though he is aware that Rosa has many guys interested in her, he wishes he were lucky.
