About
Princess Zelda (ゼルダ姫 Zeruda-hime), (TLoZ | TAoL | ALttP | OoT | OoS | OoA | FS | TWW | FSA | TMC | TP | ST | ALBW | BotW | TotK | EoW)[25][26][17] often shortened as Zelda, (SS | BotW | EoW | TCT | SSBM | SSBB | HWDE | SSBfWU | SSBU | CoH | HWAoC)[27][28] is the eponymous deuteragonist of The Legend of Zelda series. One of the key members of the Royal Family, she is the princess of the Kingdom of Hyrule and the daughter of its king, making her its second most powerful leader - though in few games like Twilight Princess, she is portrayed as the primary/sole ruler. Princess Zelda made her first appearance in the original The Legend of Zelda, and is one of the three most important characters of the franchise, alongside Link and Ganon, which is also why her name appears in the title of every game (though The Adventure of Link does not show it directly). With the exception of Link's Awakening, Majora's Mask, and Tri Force Heroes, Princess Zelda plays a central role in the series' game plots, normally as the damsel-in-distress. Usually, but not always, Zelda is the one who sends the main protagonist Link on his mission to save Hyrule, defend the Triforce, and has assisted him in defeating their archnemesis, Ganon, since Ocarina of Time. She typically possesses the Triforce of Wisdom. The princess of Hyrule is also famously known to be the main love interest of Link (despite most media depicted this at a small degree and are often rather shown as merely friends). The mortal incarnation of the Goddess Hylia, Zelda was chosen by destiny to be the keeper of the Triforce of Wisdom, which is the main reason she plays such an integral role in the legends of Hyrule, much like Link does with the Triforce of Courage or Ganon with the Triforce of Power. Just like the former, Princess Zelda is not a single individual within the franchise, but rather various individuals incarnated with the same name that have appeared across the history of Hyrule. Unlike Link, however, all of the iterations of the character belong to the same familial bloodline. Like Ganon, she also has had a couple of alter-egos such as Sheik and Tetra. Whilst each Zelda is distinct, the "fundamental soul" of the character Hylia has endured throughout each generation.[29] Princess Zelda is playable in some spin-off games and has a very prominent role in Echoes of Wisdom, where she herself serves as the main protagonist rather than Link (who appears as the tritagonist in Echoes of Wisdom). Zelda, due to her importance in the long-running titular franchise, is known as one of Nintendo's flagship characters. Characteristics Physical Appearance TLoZ Princess Zelda Artwork 2 Princess Zelda's debut appearance, from The Legend of Zelda Like Link and Ganon, Princess Zelda's appearance is inconsistent throughout the long-running series. Most typically, she is a young Hylian girl with a light-skinned slender body, elf-like ears, blue eyes, and blonde hair similar to Link's. She traditionally wears a pink, medieval-style dress with golden jewelry and a tiara. Despite already being properly depicted in official artwork of A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time has since given her now-standardized look in-game, though The Wind Waker and other cel-shaded games had given Zelda a cartoonish appearance (which was met with controversy). Like the hero, Zelda is normally a child, but some games depict the princess as a teenager or even a young adult. Although her hair color is usually light blonde in most games, it is a distinctly darker shade of blonde in Twilight Princess and originally was red in the artwork for earlier Zelda games such as The Legend of Zelda and The Adventure of Link (for her in-game sprite for both, however, it is depicted as dark brown). Her eyes in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are depicted as green rather than blue. Her ears are always pointed, as is characteristic of all Hylians, although in some games her ears are shorter than in others. Being the princess of Hyrule, Zelda is often depicted as beautiful and regal, with the exception of Skyward Sword, where she is portrayed as an ordinary girl before the kingdom of Hyrule had been established, and the Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom games have her look closer to that of a warrior similar to Link in-game, wearing a very similar cyan outfit as the hero. The royal dresses that she normally wears are long with determinate colors, such as different tones of pink, white, blue, and violet. Most of such dresses are shown with the Hylian Crest, and in almost every game, she is seen wearing a tiara with either a red, pink, or blue jewel in it. Her dress would sometimes be accompanied by a cape or hooded cloak. In some games, she also wears long gloves. Similarly to Princess Peach of the Mario series, Princess Zelda is seen wearing makeup in most 3D games, such as in Ocarina of Time (as an adult), The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Spirit Tracks, and A Link Between Worlds, and her hair is usually worn down - with the exception usually depicting her with a loose ponytail/braid. She wears high heels, although in Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, and Breath of the Wild she wears boots. She also occasionally wears sandals, such as in the aforementioned latter two games. BotW Zelda Artwork Princess Zelda's modern appearance, from Breath of the Wild. Age Much like Link who almost always shares the same age, Zelda's own years of age is very inconsistent and often debated even in official sources. As seen through various incarnations depending on the game, she is technically a child character, but some installments since The Adventure of Link or Ocarina of Time have the princess older than usual, and rarely reach adult age.[30] For example, the Princess Zelda in Twilight Princess is around 20 years of age (making herself likely slightly older than Link in this case),[31] and the one in Breath of the Wild is depicted as 16 and 17 years old during flashbacks, and 117 at the events of the game. Tears of the Kingdom takes place several years later, which means she is in her early 20s or 10,120 in that game's own flashbacks and events. Based on various official accounts of Link's age in Ocarina of Time, her adult self in this game is suggested to be 16-20 (and therefore her young self being 9-13). As with the case for the iconic Hero of Time incarnation of Link, the Nintendo 64 title remains the only game in the franchise where Princess Zelda is shown in two different stages of maturity. Personality MeetingPrincessZeldaOOT Princess Zelda, though regal and sweet, actually has a tomboyish side Princess Zelda is depicted as a kind and benevolent ruler with wisdom beyond her years and a deep love towards the people she watches over. Like Link, she is a caring, gracious, and self-sacrificing person.[32][33] Zelda's most prominent display of compassion and selflessness was when she saved the life of Midna, the Princess of the Twilight Realm, who had been nearly killed by the false King of the Twilight, Zant.[34] Zelda's wisdom is her most valuable attribute. As a matriarch, it is imperative that she makes the wisest decision concerning the fate of Hyrule; in Twilight Princess when Zant threatened her life and the lives of all of her subjects, she wisely surrendered to him.[35] She upholds her responsibilities no matter the cost and is always willing to help her friends, such as in Skyward Sword, where Zelda faces her duties as the goddess reborn and willingly remains in a deep sleep to keep Demise imprisoned within his seal.[36] Above all, Zelda is known to be a forgiving person even towards those who have harmed her before, as seen in Spirit Tracks, where she asks Anjean to take care of Byrne even though he was the one who stole her body.[37][38][39]The princess of Hyrule often tends to be brave in combat or dangerous situations like Link. According to a Gossip Stone near Hyrule Castle in Ocarina of Time, Zelda is actually a tomboy, similar to the Zora princess and Sage of Water, Ruto. Therefore, while she is normally a happy person, there are some cases where Zelda is depicted as stoic not unlike Link himself (more commonly in her older age). Although not shown explicitly, Princess Zelda has feelings for Link and vice versa in most Zelda games. On a similar note, Zelda herself is also friends with Princess Peach, who herself is the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom from the Mario franchise. Powers and Abilities Tp lightarrow1 Princess Zelda calls upon the power of the Light Spirits in Twilight Princess Throughout the longtime series, despite often serving as the damsel-in-distress especially in the earliest games (similar to Peach in Mario), Princess Zelda, as seen from certain installments and being the deuteragonist, is hardly helpless and she is capable of battling enemies, which is easily showcased in Echoes of Wisdom and other media such as the Super Smash Bros. series as she is controlled by the player. In contrast to the hero and more similarly to Ganon, her main method of combat is magic, and some games since A Link to the Past portrays various types of both magical and physical abilities, ranging from capably wielding Link's Bow to fire Light Arrows,[40] to telepathy, as seen in A Link to the Past's introduction when she pleads for Link's help.[41] However, in spite she tends to use the hero's items, Zelda does have a few of her own weapons, including a sword and the Bow of Light. Although not quite as powerful as Link himself in raw strength, as she is the possessor of the Triforce of Wisdom which enhances her abilites due to the essence of the Goddess Nayru, Zelda is still formidable enough to hold her ground against the main protagonist (especially as Sheik) and can sometimes prove herself able to combat Ganon (as Ganondorf) alongside him, or in the case of Echoes of Wisdom, Null. Like Link, Zelda is also a musician, archer, and horse rider. Early on in the timeline of the series, specifically Skyward Sword, the original Zelda, while born as a Hylian, is the mortal incarnation of the Goddess Hylia.[42] Carrying on this divine blood, her female descendants are always the crown princess of Hyrule throughout its long history.[5][43][44][45][46] Most princesses within the bloodline are also the possessor of the Triforce of Wisdom, imbued with the essence of the Goddess Nayru.[5][47][48] This essence by the sacred triangle affords Princess Zelda divine wisdom, allowing her to discern the wisest decisions, especially in situations concerning the welfare of Hyrule (however, it is not perfect, as seen in a few cases). It also grants her myriad mystical abilities, including the ability to heal others, though there is a possibility that this could also be an effect of her bloodline passing down Hylia's own powers and, later, the Light Force. Like Sages, Zelda often uses her powers to keep evil in check. As she is pure of heart, the princess is also capable of holding the Master Sword (though no game yet has herself using it for combat unlike Link). Aside from these abilities, Princess Zelda is shown to be a skilled scholar and researcher, as seen in Breath of the Wild. In addition, in the case of Ocarina of Time, she is also a Sage herself. However, much like her invaluable ally Link, it should be noted that not all incarnations of Zelda are the same in skill level, as some are more trained and/or proficient on their royal duty than others. Many of her abilities as both a Sage and the wielder of the Triforce of Wisdom are widely illustrated in Ocarina of Time, one of them being that she has prophetic visions in her dreams.[49][50] She also helps Link in their escape from Ganon's Castle by using her powers to magically open the large iron bars blocking the exits. During the final battle between Link and Ganon, Princess Zelda attempts to use her powers to restrain the King of Evil as the legendary Hero of Time aggressively delivers the final blow.[51] Being the seventh and final Sage, she is the ruler of the rest of the Six Sages, and it is with her guidance that these particular Sages (who themselves are mostly Link's childhood friends like Zelda) ultimately seal Ganon in the void of the Evil Realm following his brutal defeat by Link's hand.[5][52] Finally, with her powers as a Sage, Zelda is capable of permanently returning Link to his original time by simply using the Ocarina of Time (it is likely she also used the Triforce of Wisdom).[53] However, by doing so, this incarnation of the princess unknowingly created new history by splitting the timeline of that era into two, known as the Child and Adult Timeline - a decision which ultimately proved to be a downfall for both the fate of Link and Hyrule in either respective path, not unlike the actual fallen timeline of the kingdom (Downfall) which potentially occurs if the Hero of Time himself were to be killed at the hands of Ganon. Zelda LightArrow Princess Zelda shooting Light Arrows at Ganondorf whilst helping Link in Twilight Princess Some of Princess Zelda's physical abilities are demonstrated in games such as The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and Spirit Tracks. In The Wind Waker, Tetra as Princess Zelda aids Link in battling Ganondorf, Ganon's human form, by borrowing the young hero's Bow and using it to fire Light Arrows at the King of the Gerudo.[40] This skill is again portrayed in the final battle of Twilight Princess, where the princess yet again uses a bow and Light Arrows to strike Ganondorf riding on his steed while accompanying Link on his horse,[54] and once more in the final battle against Demon King Malladus in Spirit Tracks. In Twilight Princess, Princess Zelda is seen wielding a rapier, although it is unknown if she possesses any true sword skills like Link since she uses it in battle only after being possessed by Ganondorf. As shown in Twilight Princess, Princess Zelda is capable of communicating with the Light Spirits. Just as the princess and Link are about to be trampled by Ganondorf's ghostly army, Zelda calls upon the Light Spirits to aid her in her time of need, and the spirits grant her the Light Arrow to banish evil.[55] In Spirit Tracks, Princess Zelda can possess a Phantom's body after Link strikes it with a powered-up sword or the Lokomo Sword. While in this state, the princess can help Link solve various puzzles as well as cross certain obstacles that the young hero cannot traverse by himself.[56] Moreover, due to the Phantom's armor, she can also protect the young hero from attacks or use her strength to fight alongside Link and help him defeat enemies, as seen when fighting Geozards or Byrne.
