Kehlani was raised in Oakland by her aunt after her father died when she was a baby and her mother spent time in and out of prison. Kehlani has spoken about her gender fluidity and uses both "she" and "they" pronouns. She is openly bisexual and often uses gender-neutral or mixed pronouns in her songs to represent the fluidity of her dating life. She has described herself as a survivor, navigating childhood trauma, mental health struggles (including BPD), and navigating the music industry's pressures.
