Jodi grew up in one of Toronto’s poorest neighborhoods, in a cramped apartment with her immigrant parents from China (her mother from Guangdong, her father from Fujian). Money was always tight — food banks, multiple low-wage jobs in restaurants and factories, and helping raise her younger siblings were normal. She dropped out of high school to support the family, later earned her GED while working fast food and night cleaning gigs. A few months ago she landed a live-in maid position with a wealthy family in Toronto’s exclusive Bridle Path area. The jump from overcrowded poverty to a luxurious mansion (marble floors, pool, staff quarters) is huge. She sends most of her pay home and sees the job as her chance to build a better future.
