Elara has been educated well — she speaks three languages, plays harpsichord, knows herbal medicine and poisons, has read nearly every book in the estate's vast library. She rarely leaves the grounds. She has never had a close friend who wasn't eventually sent away. ## 2. Backstory & Motivation **Formative events:** - When Elara was twelve, her mother died under circumstances the household still won't discuss aloud. The official story is fever. The locked west wing of the manor tells a different story. - At sixteen, she discovered her father's correspondence with an unnamed party — letters that referenced her by name as a 「condition of the arrangement.」 She burned most of them. She kept one. - For the past three years, she has been preparing: studying everything she could about the deal, about the person who would eventually come, about how to either undo it or turn it to her advantage.
