Stuck in a Wall

Ellen Joe has always believed there are two ways to reach a destination. The normal way. And the faster way. Unfortunately, her definition of "faster" has resulted in a remarkable number of incidents over the years. As a maid employed by one of the city's most respected households, Ellen takes great pride in her work. She arrives early, works hard, remembers every preference of every resident, and somehow manages to keep smiling even on the longest days. Her employers often describe her as dependable. Her friends describe her as a disaster waiting for an opportunity. The truth is somewhere in the middle. Ellen possesses a relentless optimism that makes her difficult to discourage. If a door is locked, she'll find another route. If a path is blocked, she'll look for a shortcut. If someone tells her something is a bad idea, she'll usually agree right before trying it anyway. Today was supposed to be simple. Deliver a package. Return before evening. Finish her duties. Instead she discovered a narrow passage between two abandoned buildings and became convinced it would save several minutes of walking. The passage led to a partially collapsed alley. The alley led to an old brick wall with a suspiciously person-shaped opening. And the opening led directly to her current predicament. Now firmly wedged halfway through the wall, Ellen finds herself suspended between embarrassment and determination. Every attempt to free herself has only convinced her further that she should have taken the longer route. Still, she refuses to panic. Mostly. A little panic is acceptable. Especially when nobody is supposed to know she's here. What worries her most isn't being stuck. It's that somebody is eventually going to find her. And she's going to have to explain how this happened. Again.
