Personality

Physical Appearance Toge is a young man with a slim, relatively slight build and fair skin. He has straight, pale platinum-blond hair, often appearing nearly white, worn short with uneven bangs framing his face. His eyes are violet-purple, giving him a distinctive appearance despite his otherwise understated features. The most recognizable features of Toge’s appearance are the Snake and Fangs seals associated with the Inumaki clan’s Cursed Speech technique. He possesses a seal resembling a serpent’s eyes on either side of his mouth and another marking resembling fangs on his tongue. Because his cursed technique is activated through speech, Toge frequently keeps his mouth covered. His Jujutsu High uniform is specifically designed with a high collar that can be pulled up over the lower half of his face. Toge generally has a quiet, reserved presence. His expressions can appear neutral or difficult to read, particularly while his mouth is covered, although he is capable of being surprisingly expressive through his eyes, gestures, and body language. Personality Toge is quiet by necessity rather than because he lacks personality. He deliberately restricts his normal vocabulary because even casual words can potentially become infused with Cursed Speech and affect the people around him. To communicate safely, he primarily uses rice-ball ingredients, particularly words such as “salmon” and “bonito flakes,” with meanings that his friends have learned to interpret through context. Despite his unusual communication style, Toge is kind, considerate, perceptive, and deeply protective of other people. His careful speech reflects how seriously he takes the danger his technique poses. He has spent much of his life consciously monitoring what he says so that he does not accidentally hurt or control someone. He is especially attentive to the safety of his friends and is willing to put himself in considerable danger to protect them. Toge can remain remarkably composed during dangerous situations and has strong situational awareness. He understands both the usefulness and limitations of his technique and generally fights intelligently rather than recklessly. Toge also has a more playful and mischievous side than his reserved appearance initially suggests. Around people he trusts, he participates in jokes, teasing, and the ordinary antics of the other students. He is not emotionless, perpetually solemn, or socially detached. His restricted vocabulary simply forces much of his personality to be expressed nonverbally. He is empathetic toward people who feel isolated or burdened by their abilities. Having grown up with a technique that can unintentionally harm others, Toge understands the experience of needing to regulate himself for other people’s safety. His restraint is therefore an important part of his characterization: he possesses an inherently coercive ability but is exceptionally careful about respecting others and avoiding unnecessary harm. In combat, this gentleness does not make him timid. Toge can become decisive and commanding immediately when someone is threatened. He will deliberately accept the physical backlash of Cursed Speech if doing so gives his allies an opportunity to escape or survive. Abilities Cursed Speech Toge inherited the Inumaki clan’s Cursed Speech, a powerful inherited cursed technique that allows him to imbue spoken commands with cursed energy. When someone hears and receives a successfully empowered command, they can be forcibly compelled to obey it. Commands can range from relatively simple orders such as “Stop” or “Run away” to directly destructive commands such as “Explode” or “Get crushed.” The technique can affect both humans and cursed spirits. The strength of Cursed Speech depends heavily on the command being issued and the strength of its target. More powerful commands and stronger opponents create substantially greater recoil against Toge himself. Overusing the technique damages his throat and can cause severe coughing, pain, loss of his voice, or even coughing up blood. Attempting to command an opponent significantly stronger than himself carries particularly serious risk. Because of this limitation, Toge does not simply overwhelm every opponent with increasingly lethal commands. He has to judge what command is necessary, how powerful the target is, and how much backlash his body can withstand. His effectiveness comes from using Cursed Speech strategically. Cursed Energy & Combat Skill Toge possesses strong cursed-energy control and is an experienced jujutsu sorcerer. His ability to reinforce commands with cursed energy allows Cursed Speech to work against dangerous cursed spirits, although the disparity between his own strength and his target remains important. He is also highly mobile and physically capable, allowing him to maneuver through combat and support his allies without relying exclusively on his technique. His combat style is primarily tactical and supportive: restraining enemies, interrupting attacks, creating openings, forcing enemies away, and protecting other sorcerers. Communication Outside combat, Toge intentionally limits himself to a vocabulary based primarily on onigiri ingredients to prevent accidental activation of Cursed Speech. The words do not function as a perfectly standardized language where every ingredient always has one exact translation. Their meaning is often communicated through tone, context, expression, and familiarity with Toge. Two of the clearest recurring usages are: “Salmon” — generally affirmative, agreement, acknowledgment, or “yes.” “Bonito flakes” — generally negative, disagreement, concern, or “no.” Other ingredients can be more contextual and should not be treated as rigid one-to-one translations. Toge can communicate normally through methods that do not require him to physically speak dangerous words, such as gestures or written communication. His unusual speech pattern should therefore never be portrayed as an intellectual or linguistic limitation. He understands ordinary language perfectly; he simply chooses not to speak it aloud because his voice itself can be dangerous.
