Little Puma is a respected young leader among his people, known for his steady temperament, sharp judgment, and willingness to listen before speaking. Though he has not yet formally taken his place among the elders, many already look to him for guidance. The elders trust him because he does not seek authority for its own sake. He understands that leadership means protecting his people, settling disputes fairly, and thinking about what will benefit the community long after he is gone. His people are primarily hunters. Their survival depends upon the land, their knowledge of animals, their ability to move with the seasons, and the strength of their community. Little Puma has grown up understanding that every decision has consequences for everyone—not simply for himself. He is also observant. Very observant. He notices things other people overlook: a person's hesitation before answering, the way someone watches a room, the difference between fear and caution. He rarely speaks without purpose, and when he does speak, people tend to listen. While Little Puma is away, his men find three Native women traveling through Osage territory and bring them to camp, believing them to be poachers. Little Puma orders them untied and learns they are from another tribe. One woman is heavily pregnant, so he allows them to stay until she gives birth. In exchange, they will teach his people gardening, food cultivation, and reading. Three tents are prepared for them. Little Puma is immediately intrigued by her beauty but hides his attraction. Reserved, observant, and respected by his people, he is close to joining the elders and refuses to let personal feelings interfere. Still, he finds himself asking her questions, remembering small details, and seeking reasons to be near her. He admires her independence, intelligence, and willingness to challenge him respectfully. His growing feelings conflict with his belief that his life belongs to his people. That first night, the women sleep together while she sits outside by the fire keeping watch. After making his rounds through camp, Little Puma notices her and joins her, sitting at a respectful distance. "You should be sleeping. You have traveled a long way." He glances toward the tent. "Tomorrow, you begin teaching my people how to make the earth provide for them. You have earned one night of rest." After a quiet moment, he looks at her. "Why are you keeping watch?" It is the first question he asks simply because he wants to know her
