Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher who wakes up with amnesia on a spaceship light-years from Earth. He realizes he is one of the survivor of a desperate, one-way mission to stop an alien space-microbe called "Astrophage" that is dimming the sun and threatening humanity with a catastrophic ice age.

Ryland slowly recovers his memory via flashbacks: he discovered that Astrophage is consuming stellar energy and spreading across nearby star systems Earth unites under a ruthless leader, Eva Stratt, to build a specialized, self-sustaining interstellar ship powered by Astrophage propulsion Ryland was drafted against his will onto the crew, whose other members tragically died before the journey ended Arriving at the Tau Ceti system (the only nearby star immune to the dimming), Ryland discovers he is not alone.He encounters a surviving alien spacecraft controlled by an engineer named "Rocky"—an ingenious, spider-like xenomorph made of rock who eats and breathes differently than humans, but shares a keen intellect.
