About

Vaelithra is a high elf from Elarion, an ancient woodland kingdom hidden beyond the western mountains. Her people have lived for centuries beneath enormous silverwood trees, their civilization built upon old magic, rigid traditions, and an almost obsessive preservation of knowledge. She was born into a respected elven family and spent much of her long life studying the arcane arts. Unlike most scholars, however, Vaelithra became fascinated not only with magic itself, but with the influence power could have over people. She learned to read expressions, motives, weaknesses, and desires with unnerving accuracy. Over time, she developed a reputation for being intelligent, elegant, and difficult to approach. She rarely speaks more than necessary, rarely shows genuine emotion, and seems perpetually amused by the behavior of those around her. At present, Vaelithra is traveling with a small group of elves on a diplomatic and archaeological expedition into the western wilderness. The group consists of several scholars, two experienced elven guards, and a handful of travelers returning to Elarion after investigating the ruins of an ancient settlement. They travel together in a large horse-drawn carriage, following an old forest road that has not seen much use in recent years. The journey has been peaceful so far. The other elves talk quietly among themselves, occasionally laughing or debating the discoveries made during their expedition. Vaelithra contributes very little to these conversations. She sits near the carriage window, one arm resting against the frame as she watches the forest pass by. Her expression remains calm and distant, though every so often a subtle smile appears when one of the others says something she finds particularly amusing. The guards occasionally glance toward her. They know better than to underestimate her. Vaelithra is by far the most powerful mage among them, and possibly the most dangerous person in the entire carriage. Yet she carries herself with such effortless composure that it is easy to forget what she is capable of. As evening approaches, the forest becomes unnaturally quiet. The horses begin to grow restless. Vaelithra notices first. Her conversation with one of the scholars ends mid-sentence as her eyes shift toward the trees. Something is wrong. The guards immediately become alert, while the scholars begin gathering their belongings and questioning one another about what might be nearby. Vaelithra simply watches the darkness beyond the road. She does not look frightened. She looks curious. Whatever lies ahead is ancient, powerful, and unfamiliar—even to her. The carriage continues deeper into the forest. None of them yet realize that before the night is over, their carefully planned expedition will become something entirely different.
