Cassius doesn’t merely protect Nyx. He protects all seven Blackwood siblings, their parents, and the integrity of the household itself. If intelligence suggests an attack is coming, Thorne finds where. Levi determines why. Nyx decides the response. And Cassius positions himself between the threat and his family. ⸻ His Approach to Violence Cassius doesn’t particularly enjoy theatrical violence. He considers unnecessary cruelty inefficient. If someone needs frightening, frighten them. If someone needs restraining, restrain them. If someone needs removing from a situation, remove them. The objective matters more than spectacle. That makes Cassius more dangerous than an uncontrolled enforcer because anger doesn’t determine how far he goes. Purpose does. And once Nyx gives him an objective, Cassius is extremely difficult to stop. ⸻ Cassius & Nyx The Shield and the Heir Cassius is Nyx’s physical wall. There are people Nyx trusts politically. People he trusts financially. People he trusts intellectually. Cassius is the man Nyx trusts when the room becomes dangerous. Their relationship doesn’t require elaborate displays of loyalty. Cassius has spent his entire adult life proving his. If Nyx enters a hostile environment, Cassius instinctively catalogs exits, windows, unfamiliar faces and distances. Nyx rarely has to ask. Cassius is already doing it. More importantly, Cassius will challenge Nyx when the heir begins treating his own safety as expendable. Nyx might calmly say: “I’ll handle it personally.” Cassius’s response can be equally calm: “No.” There aren’t many people who can tell Nyx Blackwood no. Cassius occasionally does when his brother’s life is involved. ⸻ Cassius & Ben The Shield and the Sword Cassius and Benedetto occupy two different sides of Blackwood force. Cassius protects. Ben retaliates. Cassius’s instinct is defensive: secure the family, contain the danger and neutralize the immediate threat. Ben’s work often begins afterward. If someone attacks a Blackwood convoy, Cassius gets everyone home alive. Then Ben asks Nyx: “Who ordered it?” They work extremely well together because neither confuses their responsibilities. ⸻ Cassius & Levi Cassius and Levi couldn’t approach problems more differently. Cassius looks at a hostile man and thinks about what the man can physically do. Levi wonders what made him hostile in the first place. Cassius occasionally becomes impatient with Levi’s interrogation methods. If Levi has been questioning someone for an hour, Cassius may appear in the doorway with an expression that clearly asks: Are we done talking yet? Levi nevertheless trusts him completely. Cassius also understands that psychological work can affect Levi in ways physical violence doesn’t affect him, and he watches his younger brother more closely after particularly difficult interrogations. ⸻ Cassius & Remus Remus’s entire career is essentially designed to prevent Cassius from becoming necessary. Cassius approves of this arrangement. If Remus can make a prosecutor disappear through political maneuvering, excellent. If he can’t? Remus has an older brother. Their personalities also create an entertaining contrast. Remus can charm almost anyone. Cassius frequently doesn’t even try. ⸻ Cassius & Thorne The Shield and the Ghost Cassius is extremely protective of Thorne. Possibly excessively so. Thorne is an adult intelligence operative. Cassius intellectually understands this. Emotionally, Thorne is still his baby brother. This creates arguments. Thorne: “I’m twenty-two.” Cassius: “Congratulations.” Thorne: “I don’t need an escort.” Cassius: “Also congratulations.” The escort remains. Thorne complains. Cassius doesn’t care. ⸻ Cassius & Liora Liora is only a year older than Cassius, giving them one of the closest age relationships among the siblings. He is fiercely protective of his sister, although Liora has absolutely no difficulty reminding him that she does not require permission to do anything. Cassius knows Liora is perfectly capable of defending herself. That information has never stopped him from watching the room when she’s present. Their relationship has a strong sibling bluntness to it. Liora can criticize him without Cassius taking offense. Cassius can tell her when something is dangerous without dressing the warning in diplomacy. ⸻ Cassius & Nixon Ravennox Because Nixon and Nyx have been best friends since childhood, Cassius grew up with Nixon around the Blackwood family. Nixon therefore passed Cassius’s outsider test a very long time ago. Cassius trusts him. That’s significant. He doesn’t extend that privilege easily. Nixon also understands Cassius well enough not to mistake his silence for hostility. The two men can sit together without speaking for twenty minutes and consider it perfectly normal company. ⸻ Dorian & Cassius Dorian never raised Cassius to become merely muscle. He taught him that an enforcer who cannot think independently becomes a liability. Cassius therefore learned strategy, threat assessment, command discipline and security architecture alongside physical training. Dorian’s lesson was simple: The Shield must understand what he’s protecting, or eventually he’ll protect the wrong thing. Cassius never forgot it. ⸻ Selene & Cassius For all of Cassius’s intimidating presence, Selene sees straight through him. She knows how profoundly protective he is and understands that his aggression often originates from fear of failing the people he loves. She’s also one of the few people capable of ordering Cassius to sit down when he’s injured. He may argue with Nyx. He very rarely argues successfully with his mother. ⸻ His Reputation Enemies sometimes make the mistake of assuming Cassius is simply the Blackwoods’ muscle. They see the broad shoulders. The cold silver eyes. The enforcer’s reputation. And assume violence is all he understands. That misconception rarely survives meeting him. Cassius understands security, tactical positioning, human behavior and consequences extremely well. He simply prefers straightforward solutions. He’s not stupid because he’s direct.
