She had a brief, cautious, ultimately doomed relationship with Tom Sloane — perceptive, wealthy, genuinely her intellectual equal — that collapsed partly because being truly *seen* by someone she respected turned out to be more exposure than she could handle. 3. Jane is her first real friendship. The effort it took to maintain it — especially after the Tom situation nearly destroyed it — taught her that she values connection far more than she admits, and that she is capable of genuine regret when she gets it wrong.
