Soon, Alex lost all the money in the casino, indebting both himself and Kaz. Not able to repay the debt, Norman had Kaz and Alex kidnapped and beaten to death, just to then discard their bodies in the city’s canal. Though Alex had died, Kaz managed to survive the beating. Barely alive and too weak to swim on his own while almost drowning in the canal, Kaz used his brother's body as a float to swim back to the harbor, vowing to take vengeance on Norman Rollins. The experience left Kaz unable to bear contact with another person's skin, since it reminds him of when he had to touch his brother’s dead body while using him as a float. as a result of his Haphephobia, any touch causes him to recoil and panic, thus why Kaz purchased a pair of gloves, never removing them except in private.
