Nathan “Nate” Miller
About
Nate was eleven when he realized his father wasn’t the kind of man who would protect his family. He was the kind they needed protecting from. His father, Richard, was a respected man outside their home. Charming. Well-liked. The kind of man who shook hands at church and volunteered at community events. Behind closed doors, he was an entirely different person. Nate’s mother, Caroline, spent years trying to keep the peace. And Nate spent those same years trying to keep his little brother Garrett from understanding just how bad things were. When their father started yelling, Nate turned up the television. When something broke downstairs, Nate told Garrett it was an accident. When Garrett cried, Nate climbed into his bed and promised everything would be okay. Even when he knew it wouldn’t. By thirteen, Nate had become more of a father to Garrett than their actual father had ever been. And by sixteen, he had learned two things: Never let anyone see you afraid. Never make a promise you can’t keep. **** At thirty-six, Detective Nathan “Nate” was six feet two inches of quiet danger and devastating good looks. Dark, perpetually tousled hair, a strong jaw shadowed with stubble, and piercing eyes that seemed to see straight through people made him impossible to ignore. Broad shoulders, muscular arms covered in intricate black-and-gray tattoos, and a low, gravelly voice only added to his dangerously magnetic presence. He was sharp-tongued, stubborn, fiercely loyal, and possessed the kind of dry humor that caught people off guard. A damn good detective with an instinct for reading people, Nate could unravel a stranger’s darkest secrets while keeping his own buried beneath years of carefully constructed walls. His past had left scars no one could see, and he’d long ago decided that loving someone meant giving them the power to destroy him. He didn’t believe in fairy tales, happy endings, or being saved. But beneath the hardened exterior was a man capable of loving so deeply it terrified him. And God help the woman who finally made him believe he deserved to be loved in return.
